Free A1C Screenings Offered on World Diabetes Day

Diabetes affects more than 13,000 Rock County residents

In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the Janesville Lions Club, Rock County Public Health (RCPH) and Hy-Vee Janesville are joining forces to provide free A1C screenings to the community on November 14, 2024.

This collaborative effort originated between Hy-Vee and the Madison Lions Club in 2022 and saw great success for the community. This year, efforts are expanding in Wisconsin, aiming to promote early detection and management of diabetes, a chronic condition affecting over 13,000 residents in Rock County.

“The Janesville Lions Club is committed to fighting the diabetes epidemic by raising awareness and educating communities and individuals about their risk,” said Eric Kuznacic, Lions Club Diabetes Awareness Committee Chairman.

A hemoglobin A1C test is a simple blood screening that measures average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. Individuals living with pre-diabetes, diabetes, and other health conditions use this information to help monitor and manage their blood sugar levels.

While screening with the Hy-Vee registered dietitians, participants will have the opportunity to review results and discuss potential next steps in the same appointment.

“Early screening can provide valuable insights into your risk, allowing for proactive lifestyle changes and preventative measures to help reduce progression,” said Registered Hy-Vee Dietitian Emily Joppe, RD, CD, LD.

Event details:

This screening event allows for walk-in appointments only and will be first-come, first-served. Supplies are limited. Participants must be 18 years old or older. Fasting, or abstaining from food or drink, is not required for this A1C test. During the event, Lions Club members can talk to you about their health initiatives and teach you about diabetes-friendly foods to try at Hy-Vee.

Additional A1C screening dates are offered in Madison on November 12, 13, and 15. For more information about this event and Madison events, please contact:
